Testimonial from Mairi Smith, Drayton Valley - Office Administration Student:
I attended a large post-secondary school the year before I attended Choice College. It felt crowded and class sizes were large. Although I caught on quickly to quite a bit of what was being taught, when it came time for an instructor to provide assistance, they were often busy, sidetracked, or else the most vocal person in the class caught their attention over someone sitting and waiting with their hand up.
I decided to take the Office Administration program at Choice College with my sister, and not being from the Spruce Grove area we didn’t know anyone. With that said, it didn’t take long for our class to get to know each other. We were also greeted by the receptionist when we would come in the door every morning. It was great to be in a personable environment. Being a part of a small class, if there was ever a time that I needed help, an instructor would always be there to do so.
When the time to find a practicum came around I felt doubtful because of previous attempts before going to the college. After a few failed attempts, my instructor provided assistance and gave some suggestions about places I never would have thought of myself. Thankfully I took her advice, because after trying one of the places I received a call back for the position I am still at today. I am on contract for Drayton Valley and District Family and Community Support Services until the end of December, and my sister was hired on as Economic Development Assistant which now coincides with a maternity leave position for a receptionist/utility billing position for the Town of Drayton Valley. My instructor was very supportive and never sounded doubtful on getting any of us a position. Now that I have got some experience and my foot in the door I couldn’t be happier. In the end, I completed the course with higher marks than I had expected and a great deal of knowledge. I think this was in part due to the different learning tactics the instructors used. With the skills I have attained I feel very valuable in the office I now work for. I would recommend Choice College to anyone, and would consider going back if any of the other courses strike an interest with me in the future
